Scalp health has recently become more normalized and we want to keep it that way. It used to be this taboo topic that we ALL avoided but now, we realize we want to make sure everyone has a healthy, happy scalp no matter what the conversation entails! I think it is often forgotten that our scalp is skin. We treat the skin on our face with top quality ingredients, why would we not do the same for our scalps? We expect our scalps to be healthy without trying, but we would never skip a day in our facial skincare!!
In this blog, I will be discussing the issues of our scalp and how to care for your scalp through it all. I will also list our favourite products for scalp health and WHY!
We will have one of two issues with our scalps: Overly oil or overly dry! Neither of which are pleasant!! Or we can also get blessed with an oily scalp and dry ends – our greatest enemy!! However, with a couple tweaks in your routine we can get you back on track in no time!!
Oily Scalp
If you have an oily scalp you are likely experiencing an overproduction of sebum and/or overactive sebaceous glands. If you have to wash your hair what feels like everyday, rely on dry shampoo or struggle to not look greasy, this is for you.
The best course of action is to regulate the scalp with a balancing shampoo and use a scalp scrub once a week! This combination will regulate the overproduction of sebum, cleanse and purify the scalp while removing buildup and dandruff. These products are our tried and true for oily scalp concerns. With some typical oil control products, they tend to be over stripping and drying to the scalp and hair, but these products will simply cleanse your scalp leaving it fresh, clean and supple, while giving your hair a bounce it may have never had!!
Overtime, you will notice you won’t have to wash your hair as much as you previously did. However, it is normal for your scalp to go through a “purging” phase where it will feel like its not working. Trust me. It is. Push through the oily phase!! You’ll be thanking me later.
Here’s our Solution:
***Hot Tip #1*** Try to push your wash days as far as part as possible… Sounds counterintuitive right? Yes, but typically people with oily scalps wash everyday –> This contributes to the overproduction of sebum and oily-ness; because our scalps literally go into overdrive trying to keep up with us constantly stripping the oils from it. Plan a couple hat days and start pushing it girlfriend.. you will get oily none the less!!
However, your scalp will realize quickly that it doesn’t have to send tons of oils to the surface because they aren’t being stripped away as fast as they are being produced. Try going three days for a week, then four days the next week, your scalp will turn the corner fast! Guaranteed!!! Typically, washing every 4-6 days is ideal, you’ll just have to find the happy medium for you!
Dry Scalp
Is your scalp flaky, dry and dandruffy? Maybe even irritated and sore? This is totally normal and will usually resolve with proper scalp care. However, if this is chronic, or extremely irritated and flakey, reach out to you doctor to rule anything else out first!
To treat a dry scalp, you must add hydration, exfoliation and increased circulation to your routine! Here is how – cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate. Sounds familiar right?! Use a lightweight moisturizing shampoo and a soothing yet hydrating masque. In combination, these products with cleanse, sooth, hydrate and regulate the scalps skin. All we have left to do now is exfoliate. For dry, sensitive scalps we recommend the Apaisant Soothing Scalp Scrub (but, if you don’t struggle with sensitivity, go ahead and use Scrub Energisant!!) paired with our tried and true Scalp Massager to really stimulate and exfoliate. You’ll quickly notice your scalp feeling more refreshed and revitalized and you will be fearless to wear black! (If you know , you know!)
Our Dry Scalp Routine:
Oily Scalp & Dry Ends
The dreadful confusion that comes with this issue is understandable. How can this be possible?! Well, it all has to do with over washing to make up for the oily roots, and if we aren’t conditioning enough, our ends suffer from constantly being stripped too. It is a simple fix though!! This power duo will balance, soothe and hydrate your scalp, lengths and ends all at once. To add extra hydration, and nourishment to your lengths, use a leave in like our Nutritive – 8h Magic Night Serum from the ears down!
Our Fix:
***Hot Tip #2*** Use our Pomme Brush to evenly distribute all of your products and softly invigorate the scalp to increase blood flow for healthy hair! Use in or out of shower, it will bend with your hair and scalp to avoid any breaking or pulling that comes with a typical brush.
Let’s Recap, Sha’ll We?
We know it can be overwhelming and confusing to figure out where to even begin. Start with a scrub. This will help with oily-ness or dryness. It is pretty much a no fail!! Promise.
When choosing your products, stick to your 3 main concerns.
- Choose a shampoo based directly on the condition of your scalp. (Oily/Dry/Irritated/Normal)
- Choose a conditioner that will fit your needs for your lengths and ends. (Dry/Weak/Sensitized/Brittle)
- Choose a leave in based on your overall main concern. (Scalp issues/Hair Fall/Dryness)
Once you’ve established your base, you can go from there! Remember, our scalps are like skin, so treat it as so. Most of all, healthy scalp = happy hair. It’s like getting botox without using skincare. They go hand in hand, always!
With love,
