Kérastase Blonde Guard Review: Heat and UV Protection for Blonde and Highlighted Hair

If you colour your blonde hair, whether that's a full lightening service or highlights, you already know the maintenance that comes with it: the toning appointments, the glossing, the deep conditioning treatments. You invest a lot into keeping your colour looking fresh, and then life happens. You blow-dry it. You sit by the pool. You go to the beach. And slowly, quietly, your beautiful blonde starts to look a little rough.

That's not just a you problem. That's just what happens when hair that's already been through a lightening process meets the real world with no protection.

The new Kerastase Blond Absolu Blond Guard is the product I've been waiting for. Here's what it actually does, and why I'm already so obsessed.

What It Protects Against (and Why Each One Matters)

The Blond Guard is described as a "Hydrating Wonder Shield", which sounds great, but I want you to actually understand what that means for your hair day to day.

Every time you use a blow dryer or flat iron on lightened hair, you're applying direct heat to a fibre that is already more porous and fragile than virgin hair. The Blond Guard creates a thermal barrier before you style, so the heat doesn't drive moisture out of the shaft or cause further damage to the cuticle.

Sun exposure is one of the most overlooked causes of colour fading, particularly for blondes. UV rays break down the colour molecules in the hair, which is why summer blondes can look brassy or dull by September. The Blond Guard offers UV protection that slows that process down.

Chlorine is particularly aggressive on lightened hair. It strips moisture, alters tone, and leaves hair feeling straw-like. If you swim regularly, this alone is reason enough to keep this in your bag.

Salt works differently from chlorine but does similar damage. It draws moisture out of the hair fibre and increases porosity over time, which means your colour doesn't hold as well and your hair feels rougher. The Blond Guard forms a protective layer that limits how much of that mineral load gets into your hair shaft.

All of the above contribute to one overall result: dehydration. Dry, porous, depleted hair loses its shine and softness fast. The Blond Guard works actively to keep moisture in, not just to block aggressors out.

The Numbers Worth Knowing

72 hours of hydration from a single application.

That's not a claim I expected when I first read through the education on this, but it comes down to the two molecular weights of hyaluronic acid in the formula. The smaller molecule penetrates the hair fibre from the inside; the larger molecule sits on the exterior to smooth the cuticle and add softness. Both are working continuously after the application.

99% protection against blonde aggressors.

That's the in vitro protection figure for the five stressors listed above: heat, UV, chlorine, salt water, and dehydration.

The Technology Behind It

The Blond Absolu line is built around a few key ingredients, and the Blonde Guard carries all of them.

Hyaluronic Acids (two molecular weights):

Already explained above, but worth repeating because it's genuinely what separates this from a standard leave-in. Most hydrating products work on the surface. The dual molecular weight approach means you're actually getting hydration delivered inside the fibre, not just coated on top of it.

Vitamin C:

Maintains the structural integrity of the hair fibre, helping it stay resilient against mechanical stress like brushing and styling.

Vitamin E:

An antioxidant that protects hair from oxidative damage, which is particularly relevant for colour-treated hair since lightening processes leave the hair more vulnerable.

Where It Fits in Your Routine

The Blond Guard is a leave-in treatment applied after washing and before styling.

If you're coming in for a colour or bleaching service at our Kelowna or Toronto salon, our team will use it as part of your appointment. Between visits, it's the product that keeps your hair in the best possible condition until we see you next!

It works alongside the rest of the Blond Absolu line, specifically the Bain Ultra-Violet shampoo, Cicaflash conditioner and L'Huile Cicafloss finishing oil, but it also does its job well as a standalone step if you're adding it into an already existing routine.

My Honest Take

When Kerastase introduced the Blond Guard as a part of the Blond Absolu lineup, I got genuinely excited, because it fills a gap I've been noticing for a long time. And it isn't just for blondes, Blonde Guard is great for any coloured hair; everyone can use it.

Clients come in with beautiful colour and come back six weeks later with hair that looks visually dull, feels dry and has gone brassy faster than it should. A lot of that comes down to daily exposure: heat tools, sun, pool water and just not enough moisture retention between appointments. There was never one product that addressed all of it in a single step. Until now.

It takes about ten seconds to apply, it works with any styling routine, and the difference in how colour holds is real.

If you colour your hair, no matter the colour, and you're currently not using any kind of protective leave-in, this is where I'd start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Blonde Guard only for fully bleached hair, or can I use it on highlights?
It's formulated for all types of blonde hair, so yes, highlighted hair absolutely qualifies. If your hair has any lightening done to it, whether that's a full colour, balayage, or partial highlights, the Blonde Guard is doing something useful for you.

How often do I need to use it?
Every wash, ideally. It's a leave-in, so the application is quick, and the 72-hour hydration window means it's working until your next shampoo. Think of it less like a treatment you do occasionally and more like a daily SPF for your blonde.

Can I use it on dry hair, or does it have to go on wet hair?
Towel-dried hair before styling is the ideal application. That said, you can apply it to dry hair as needed by warming a small amount in your palms first and distributing it through the lengths. It won't make your hair greasy.

Do I need the rest of the Blond Absolu line for it to work?
No. It works well as a standalone step in any routine. That said, if you're pairing it with the Bain Ultra-Violet shampoo and Cicaflash conditioner, you'll get more out of all three together. The full routine was clinically tested as a system, which is where the two-month salon-fresh result claim comes from.

I swim a lot in the summer. Is this enough protection against chlorine?
It offers meaningful protection, and it's significantly better than going in with nothing. Apply it before you swim and reapply after you wash your hair post-swim. If you're swimming multiple times a week, also look at the Bain Ultra-Violet shampoo to help neutralize any mineral buildup and tone at the same time.
